Mira Jean McGowen McDuffie was born on August 18, 1943, in Livingston, Texas, to the late Letha Mae and Lewis McGowen. She received her formal education in the schools of Livingston and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1962. She later continued her studies at Prairie View A&M University.
At an early age, Mira Jean gave her life to Christ and began her spiritual journey at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Livingston. Upon relocating to Houston, she joined the ministry of Reverend Leo Daniels at Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served for many years. She eventually became a devoted member of her son's church, Palace of Praise, where she served as Mother of the Church and a dedicated member of the Advisory Board of Directors until her passing.
On January 22, 1965, Mira united in holy matrimony with the love of her life, Willie C. McDuffie. To this union, two sons were born: Keith U. McDuffie and Pastor Efrem Z. McDuffie.
Mira was a teacher for several years in the Cleveland Independent School District, educating students from as early as 4th grade to high school. Her passion for youth development and learning left a lasting impression on many of her students. In addition, she served as the Lead Director at The Women's Shop for over 10 years. Her dedication, grace, and kindness made her a respected and admired leader. Her work in both education and retail ministry played a significant role in her outreach journey, touching lives and uplifting everyone who crossed her path.
On March 23, 1991, after 26 years of marriage, Willie C. McDuffie was called home to be with the Lord.
Devoted to her husband's legacy and mission, Mira Jean stepped boldly into leadership as CEO of McDuffie's Mortuary both in Houston and Cleveland, Texas. Under her guidance, the mortuary served the Greater Houston area and beyond, offering comfort, compassion, and care to countless families. Her passion, unwavering strength, and love for people were her calling from God and continued to be her driving force until the day He called her home.
